ALCOHOL ADDICTION

One part of our holistic approach is fighting addiction with medication-assisted treatment.

Alcoholism, clinically referred to as Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), is a common, yet chronic condition that involves the compulsive consumption of alcohol.

Naltrexone blocks opioid receptors that are involved in the rewarding effects of drinking and the craving for alcohol. An extended-release version called Vivitrol is a brand name drug for Naltrexone.

What is Vivitrol?

Vivitrol reduces craving for opioids and alcohol with extended-release naltrexone that can last for up to 30 days. It was approved by the FDA for use to combat alcohol addiction in 2006.

Vivitrol is given by an injection administered by a clinician once a month. It is not a narcotic and works differently than other addiction treatment medicines. It is important that you be opioid and alcohol-free for at least two weeks before your first injection to avoid sudden withdrawal symptoms.

It is also imperative that you abstain from alcohol use while you are on Vivitrol. Consumption of alcohol may result in dangerous and negative side effects.

Other medications used in treating alcohol withdrawl include:

  • Oral Naltrexone
  • Campral
  • Antabuse
  • Topiramate
